Takoyaki, saba, engawa & anago (aka friday lunch)
My coworkers all went to a sandwich shop for lunch today, and I was really craving something a little more exciting for lunch. I ended up paying the price for it… $55 dollars, but, I had an awesome lunch, got to speak Japanese for two hours and hang out in East Villageć¼so, no regrets. I went to a sushi place right on the corner of 3rd Ave and 9th street. I had not been there before, and honestly it did not look to special, but it was one of the only places that was open for lunch. The itamae-san spoke Japanese, and ended up being pretty good. I started off with saba, a personal favorite, and also noticed there was hirame on the menu. Whenever I see hirame, I always ask if they have engawa. It’s not always on the menu, but they often have it. It’s the muscle of the dorsil fin, and has the best texture! In the photo it’s the fish wrapped in shiso. They also had anago, which I don’t see too often, so I got that too. After lunch I was still a little hungry, so on the way home I stopped at a takoyaki joint that was making sales out of their front window.

I love anago. Never had engawa… I’ll have to try it! Everything looks delicious.
These saba and engawa look just like how I would prepare. They must be very good.
I sent my son Manga that you sent for us by mail. Thanks again.
I’m taking my French friend to your favorite riverside shack tomorrow.
I’m sure he’ll love it.
@Tashin:
Oh no! Shipping the manga back must have cost more than the books! Thanks for doing that.
I am jealous your friend gets to go eat ayu! I want to go again
The sushi was actually really good, the itamae-san was a lot older, he seemed experienced. The place ended up being good, it just did not look like it was going to be from the outside of the building.
